When the state budget was introduced in late February, it included provisions that would allow local governments and technical colleges to increase property taxes on homeowners and property owners. The WRA was opposed to lifting the property tax caps and legislative Republicans held the line.

Background: Since 2011, Wisconsin has controlled property tax increases by placing strict levy limits on municipalities and counties. During this time, the property tax freeze saved Wisconsin families and businesses $3.5 billion. However, even after this, property taxes remain too high in the Badger State.

What’s in play:

  • Republicans have passed a budget that holds the line on property taxes and maintains the levy limits.
  • Now Gov. Evers must decide whether to accept the GOP budget plan or significantly modify the document with his powerful veto pen.
  • If the governor vetoes the budget or significantly alters it through veto, the GOP-controlled legislature must decide how to respond.

Bill status: The state budget is waiting for action by the governor.
